As soon as I drove into my compound, Elo called. Hearing his voice was so reassuring that my doubts of about 40 minutes ago vanished instantly, I started making up excuses for him in my head. ‘it must have been a call from his boss’, ‘it must have been a call from his dad’….blahblah blah.
One month after we had met and gone on several dates, Elo asked me to be his woman. I was beyond excited. On that particular night we went for an event at the Muson centre and on our way home just before he got to my house, he started narrating how lovely it had been for him the past one month spending time with me and getting to know me better. I quietly listened as I tried not to blush at the sweet nothings he whispered to my ears. To cut a long story short, I agreed to a relationship with Elo and from then on it was love and many other romantic stories.
Even my staff could tell there was a change, I mean the usual Awele daily drama suddenly disappeared. Instead of being so upset all the time, I started to commend their work. A woman with a good man in her life isn’t always hard to spot. The smiles and laughter just flow from the heart.
One Thursday afternoon at the store, I sent one of my girls to get fabrics and when she returned while checking all that she bought she noticed she forgot the aqua silk satin I needed to finish a maid of honour’s dress. She was literally shaking when she got into my office to report herself. Instead of my usual screaming down the high heavens, I burst into laughter as she shook before me.
She was shocked when I asked her not to worry that she could go back to get it the next day. As she stepped out of my office I heard the other girls whisper to her ‘ Omo, u geh luck o…u meet madam better blood for house today’ see these girls oooo….yeye them I thought to myself but really they were right.
Around 3pm one Friday about 5months into our relationship, Elo called to ask me to lunch at a restaurant not too far from my store. Of course, I agreed. He picked me up and we had a sumptuous meal. On our way out of the restaurant we ran into someone who was hailing him from afar. Obviously a long time friend. “Elo, Elo, Eloezzy, how far na?’’ Elo quickly dropped his car keys in my hands and rushed forward to hug his friend.
I walked slowly to the car, feeling a bit disappointed that he didn’t introduce me to his friend but something in me just told me to stick out my ‘Amebo antennas’ I listened as the guy asked him what he was doing in Lagos and he explained himself. And then the bombshell dropped
‘Ehen how is Lade and your kids na?, its been a while oooo…chai!’
Eerm did I hear right? who be Lade? His sister perhaps….Oh don’t be silly Awele it must be his wife he has kids too! Omg! My Elo is married? Or is he a widower? Lade could be his sister?
I quickly sank into the chair as I watched Elo walk back to the car.
But then again I thought, the guy don born pikin dem? What if Lade is his wife?
OMG! Awele you don enter am.
Watch out for the rest of Awele’s story.
